We've been back up north for just under a week and things have been very hectic as we had our entire sealift waiting inside the house ready to be unpacked. We also had to wait a few days for the rest of our luggage to show up because we had two excess pieces and nameless airline was apparently full of crap (in many ways). This is the time of year when everyone is moving up north. The airline rep even asked us if we were moving. I'm like sure with 4 suite cases, a gun and a pack & play, that's all we need to start a new life in the north. Little did she know that when we did move up we had TWENTY excess pieces! Plus some other junk we had sent up later. 4 pieces of luggage can barely fit my personal clothing, let alone Nathans.
Everyone on this day flying with nameless airline, was traveling with oversized luggage, so there was a massive line up that threatened tardiness. We have to stop by oversized because we travel with the dog and they have to swab the cage for all those explosives that Tallinn likes to carry around. My complaint, is it necessary for everyone traveling north to have to pack with Rubber Maid? Especially when your stuff is in a small container, why not save yourself the trouble of waiting in another line and shove that jazz into a suite case so the air line doesn't send you to the oversized line? I guess it's the only way northerners like to travel. I prefer personally to use a suite case, it gets the job done and I don't have to unravel 10 thousand metres of tape if I need in.
I guess waiting in an extra line doesn't matter anyways in future, because Nathan and I vow to show up at the airport 10 hours earlier when we start traveling with the baby. The whole idea of traveling with the dog, dog kennel, 4 suite cases, stroller, car seat, baby, carry-ons gives me a little seizure every time I think about it. Usually Nathan is dragging a cart, pushing one, and I have the dog and am also pushing a cart. How exactly do we add the baby to all that?
It's nice to be back home and even nicer we made it in one day. We must have hit the lottery this time, a lot of flights have recently been canceled because of fog. The weather here is fairly chilly, and it threatens to snow soon. I'm very happy I went ahead and bought myself a cost-co winter jacket that is belly friendly, I even wore it last night. Then I bent over and tore the zipper. I'm growing by the minute.

ack!! How dare you complain about Northern Samsonite! That quality blue plastic is the best stuff going. heheheh
The best was when we flew up with tires for our quads. We duck taped 4 tire together for the trip! Ah the looks we got.
I bet you got funny ones though with a gun and a playpen!!!
Travelling with kids is fun. Especially now since they are changing the rules (AGAIN) and are now considering a carseat and stroller luggage. And, now that most airlines only allow you one piece of luggage you are guaranteed to go over by at least 1 piece! But, the advantage of travelling with small kids is that you get to board first!
Glad you’re back, Jen and Nathan. Sorry we couldn't make it out last night. Michele had just gotten home from Ottawa and was tired and I’m still hurting from the weekend move. (Am I out of shape!) We are almost neighbors with you now
You get the hang of travelling with kids pretty quick (although it is annoying that they keep changing the rules!!!) - we don't bring a car seat up here with us (don't use it here), and it is a must to have a baby carrier of some type to get around the airport while dragging luggage around - I use a sleeveless summer amoutie, or my baby bjorn (which I think is fabulous by the way). We've done lots of travelling with Paige and are looking to go to Mexico this winter with both girls...you just have to plan a bit more (although a newborn is the best because you don't have to carry food etc)
Hmmm, dissing rubbermaid? Real northerners do not diss rubbermaid! ;-) Northern airlines shred suitcases, and rubbermaid is much easier to haul through a snowdrift (not that this is the season... yet). But yeah, I sure wish rubbermaid would get their act together and build a suitcase, or a tub with latches. The tape just doesn't stick to the new plastic the way it did to their older formula in the 1990's.

i travel with a 2 huge colemans cooler..lol and we always get sent to oversize.
when they are babies..easy peasy, "wear" them. i think we've travel with a stroller once and hated it since its cumbersome to unhook that thing and put it thru security and i hv those wal mart cheapie for travel
i am going to travel with Ava and Ben solo this winter. now that's a circus on its own.

I hear you. I have a one year old. We've been traveling from Iqaluit to Ottawa a few times with him -- including on my own without my husband a couple of times. You want to get a diaper bag that fits enough stuff: big enough for extra, extra clothes and diapers if you will be at the airport 10 hours early! I used two bags... one small one with a couple of diapers and a change of clothes. That bag was easy to carry down the aisle of the plane and into the little washroom. Then another bag with all the other loot.
We keep some baby stuff in Ottawa because I have a sister who lives there. But we have also rented stuff. We've used www.precioustravellers.ca The cost can add up but definitely helped us out one time.
I have lots of recommendations about anything baby related... but I will suggest "100 Things I Wish I Knew In My Baby's First Year: Keys To Making Parenting Easier And Your Baby Happier". I didn't agree with everything but I thought it was a good book. And the schedule they had their baby sleeping was impossible -- and my baby was (and is) a good sleeper. This book would compliment the "What to Expect" books.
wow,sounds like we are going to have fun when we travel up there on the October 5th. its our first time traveling up north and we are going to live in Arviat for about a year, and we are going to be bringing our dog and a bird. seems like its going to be a long couple of days.
I love the new banner! And I miss Mr. Tallinn! Will he be coming here in November too? :)
