This is me & Ezri getting into the amauti, as requested by Catherine in my comments section. It may look as though I do get her in all by myself, but the truth is I needed a little help from my friend Morena who also did the filming for our feature presentation. We just did some fancy editing to make it seem like I didn't...but if you pretend I didn't need help, that's what it should look like. I have cotton on the inside of the pouch that apparently makes it harder for the baby to slide it, although I have mastered getting her out all by myself. Any northern moms have good tips for getting their babies in solo?

That was great! LOL...good job Jen! Meaghan gave me a suggestion to take one arm out of the amauti and use that arm to get her in, and then stick your arm back in...that was helpful until Ainsley was able help me help her in. Definately a bit of a dance though, lol!

That was hilarious......especially the get down on your knees and pop her out on the chesterfield! Even David watched it and laughed, twice.

I cannot get the video to load on this computer. But what I do is lay Hunter on his tummy on the sofa. Then I lean over him and pull my hood over him. I grab him by the hips and hoist him in. Works pretty good! Perhaps I should make a video when I get home too!!
Dang! You beat me to it. :) I put Halia onto my shoulder first (and I still have her facing out, with her back against mine) and then I pull the hood up. Then I slide her behind my head and drop her while tugging on the hood. That way, she slides into the pouch instead of into the hood. It took me two kids to learn how to do it by myself, so obviously it takes some practice! :)
That is awesome! Certainly something to be shown with pride at her wedding reception. :)
You know what else is funny? My mom has close to the same video made on like 8mm (or whatever ancient technology they used in the early 80s) of getting my little sister in and out of an amauti when we lived in Broughton way back then.
i have one on my facebook video page. i did it myself with Ben, Frank was filming, i imagine it would be easier with a wee baby that is swaddled since no legs are in the way when they are lowered in the pouch.

I guess practice is the key to putting the baby in the amauti. When my baby was swaddled, i needed help only to put him inside. But when Gabriel was older (legs apart), he almost got inside by himself. Always do it on a soft surface (bed or carpet), it is more safe if the baby falls. I loved wearing the amauti my Inuk friend made me, I felt proud and beautiful!. The best is to get advice from the Inuit on that matter! They know best, don't they?
That was fascinating to watch! You didn't say how long it took you! I'm pretty sure it would take me most of the day if I had tried it and I might have dropped the baby!
Does your daughter like it? At what age do you have to stop carrying the baby like this?

I am from Yellowknife, this is a great video! congrat! I am trying, and I must repeat trying to saw an amauti exactly like yours for me right now,(I am pregnant) and this is not easy cause I got the pattern from an old Inuk friend, this pattern is old and small size, and I need a more like medium, so I am having hard time to make it bigger without losing the nice lines! Where did you get your amauti?
